Review

“Agile coaches, you’re gonna be happy with this book. Kenny Rubin has created an indispensable resource for us. Do you have a manager that just doesn’t ‘get it’? Hand them this book and ask them to flip to Chapter 3 for a complete explanation of how Scrum is less risky than plan-driven management. It’s written just for them–in management-speak. Want to help the team come to a common understanding of Scrum? The visual icon language used throughout this book will help you help them. These are just two ways this book can aid you to coach Scrum teams. Use it well.”
–Lyssa Adkins, Coach of Agile Coaches, Agile Coaching Institute; author, Coaching Agile Teams

“One of the best, most comprehensive descriptions of the core Scrum framework out there! Essential Scrum is for anyone–new to or experienced with Scrum–who’s interested in the most important aspects of the process. Kenny does an excellent job of distilling the key tenets of the Scrum framework into a simple format with compelling visuals. As a Scrum coach for many teams, I continually reference the material for new ways to help teams that are learning and practicing the framework. I’ve seen Scrum continually misinterpreted and poorly implemented by big companies and tool vendors for more than ten years. Reading this book will help you get back to the basics and focus on what’s important.”
–Joe Balistrieri, Process Development Manager, Rockwell Automation

“Corporate IT leadership, which has been slow to embrace agile methods, would benefit immensely from giving a copy of this book to all of their project and delivery managers. Kenny Rubin has laid out in this book all the pragmatic business case and process materials needed for any corporate IT shop to successfully implement Scrum.”
–John F. Bauer III, veteran of technical solution delivery in large corporate IT shops

“Kenny’s extensive experience as a consultant, trainer, and past managing director of the Scrum Alliance is evident in this book. Along with providing the basics and introduction to Scrum, this book addresses the questions of masses–what happens to project managers? Essential Scrum helps us understand the big picture and guides how organization leaders can support and be involved with their Scrum teams for successful agile transformations.”
–Sameer S. Bendre CSM, PMP, Senior Consultant, 3i Infotech Inc.

“If you’re new to agile development or to Scrum, this book will give you a flying start. The examples and descriptions are clear and vivid, and you’ll often find yourself asking a question just before the book addresses that very topic.”
–Johannes Brodwall, Principal Solution Architect, Steria Norway

“Kenny’s well-structured explanations have a clarity to them that echoes the sensibilities of Smalltalk–the development environment with which he worked for years and from which both Scrum and Extreme Programming were born. This book pulls together a thorough set of agile management principles that really hit the mark and will no doubt guide you toward a more effective agile approach.”
–Rowan Bunning, Founder, Scrum WithStyle

“There are lots of books on Scrum these days, but this book takes a new angle, a reality check for software practitioners. Kenny uses real-world examples and clear illustrations to show what makes a solid foundation for successful agile development. Readers will u

I run a large team of hundreds of developers (at Amazon, ironically, if you''re reading this review!). After spending a couple years reading all the books about "scaling agile", etc, we have instead decided that we can get 90% of the benefit of Scrum and Agile by focusing on making each individual team rigorous and productive, and not focusing on the large scale so much. We then spent another year looking around for a method to follow. There are as many ways to do Agile as there are teams and projects; but we found that if we all adopted one philosophy/approach together, we could both help each other by moving teammates around between teams as their careers and desires led them but also so that all of our own tooling (a very heavily customized Jira instance) could benefit everybody.

We found Ken''s book to be the one that we can all align on. It''s prescriptive enough to be useful but loose enough that teams feel freedom to innovate. The examples and pictures are at just the right level. You can tell it''s written by somebody who lives Agile, and this helps developers respect the content and have more open minds.

I now give a copy of Ken''s book to every new manager, product manager, and senior engineer, with their name written on it, by me, with a welcome note from me inside the cover. Ken''s book has been a huge help to our team and perhaps it can be to yours as well!

Honestly, I can''t believe how good this book is. I read this prior to sitting through a Certified Scrum Master course and a Certified Scrum Product Owner course (I took them back to back). Ken''s book covered similar course material, but with more depth and very good discussion on the various alternatives available. Scrum is a framework, and consequently, there are many approaches to solve different problems, and this book does an absolutely outstanding job reviewing them. If you take the time to read and think about the material presented, you will be way, way ahead of most scrum practitioners. If you by one book on Scrum, this should be it!

I just took Ken’s scrum master training and purchased this book thinking - why not? I am very much pleased at the organization and additional breakdown of each aspect of scrum. This book covers BOTH the basics as well as providing you with an explanation of the framework so that you can begin applying scrum principles with your teams and projects. This is an EXCEPTIONALLY written manual on how to perform and ensure that you are adding value to your teams. If you are on the fence - jump over it! This is definitely the book for you. I would suggest attending his training course as well - very thorough and great overview but this book pushes the envelope and will allow you to achieve your agile goals in your career and your organization

This is a very complete book, bringing value to both experienced and novices in Scrum. For experienced developers and project managers, the book offers a complete list of features and recommendations about which particular tools to use in different phases of a Scrum initiative. That list works as a repository of best practices that experienced personnel can aggregate into their projects. For novice developers, the book takes the time to explain exactly how Scrum works and why things are done in a certain way in Scrum projects, although still making it clear that each Scrum team will probably deviate a little of the practices listed in the book because of their specific context. Overall, a very good resource to have as part of a portfolio of Agile tools.

I read this book cover to cover and it is excellent. I knew next to nothing about Scrum but was anxious to learn since I''m starting a new job with an organisation which uses Scrum, and they are sending me on a Certified ScrumMaster course next month. In every aspect covered in the book, I started off each chapter not really understanding where we were going, but by the end of each chapter I understood all concepts covered and was completely on-board with the value of the framework. The examples and analogies are brilliant. I''m sure I''ll be referring to this book time and time again over the coming months.

As with all methods and approaches your mileage will vary, but you could do little better than to use this as a starting point and guide. I found it both comprehensive and detailed and provided sufficient background, both theoretical and practical, to fuel my excursions into the Agile world.

This book provides a comprehensive description of the Scrum framework backed up by plenty of discussion, illustrations and practical tips. It''s an excellent guide for the adoption and ongoing implementation of Scrum. It also covers advanced concepts such as Portfolio Planning, Envisioning and technical debt. Also useful is how the book relates key aspects of Scrum to economic realities by providing cost/benefit calculations to show how they support and affect decision making in the framework. This is excellent material to demonstrate the value of Scrum to commercial stakeholders. The author''s accessible style and excellent layout of chapters make it very easy to read. An added benefit is the author''s use of a set of icons and diagrams that can be downloaded from the books website and used in internal presentations.
