I really fell off the McCartney bandwagon after Back to the Egg. I jumped back on for Flowers in the Dirt. Nothing really hit me as good after Egg and except for FITD.

Flaming Pie to me is a bit of a snooze. To quiet and vanilla. But I bought the 2 disc set because I am a completist.

I hadn’t listened to the album in years, and listening to it again today I found myself skipping through most of the songs. Bleh.

But the best part of this two disc set is the second disc. The bonus tracks are excellent. I like the demos far more than I like the finished productions. Really very nice, and a lot of atmosphere.

So maybe it was the production, I’m not sure. But I found that the price was worth it for the second disc most definitely.

Ps.
There are no castles in Versailles.

Of course the deluxe edition is way over priced and a slap in the face of us mega fans that these boxes are made for. Of course there could be more if they ever asked a real fan for help. But this set is great! Yoko denied dying Linda a simple request and was ridiculous about the Flaming Pie joke ruining a cool part of the anthology project! Somehow with all the adversity genius Paul came up with a masterpiece! The title being a great dig at Yoko ruining the John quote!

As has become the norm with these deluxe McCartney sets, the price is high, but it’s hard to argue with the package itself. The original album is one of his best, then you get the DVDs, demos and b-sides as well as a beautifully produced book and other little goodies. I have dropped a star for a few reasons, other than the retail price:

1. CD 5 (at the mill) is pretty pointless, consisting of Paul giving a tour of his studio. Parts are interesting, but these are included in the accompanying documentary DVD and part of the Oobu Joobu series on disc 4.

2. Reproductions of handwritten notes are ok, but are they really needed? It just seems like extras are thrown in as an excuse to up the price. When the archive series started, the first few sets were lovely bound books with all the info, plus the CDs and DVDs, but soon they became these overblown boxes at four times the price.

Having said that, these are great sets, and Flaming Pie being one of his best albums makes this one of the better of the series. It was made during an inspired but tough time - the Beatles Anthology project had lot a fire in him, as well as reaffirmed his friendship with his Beatle colleagues (Ringo appears on a Paul album for the first time in over a decade), but this was also a harrowing few years where his wife Linda battled with cancer. She would lose that battle a few short months after her appearance in the Beautiful Night video (included on the second dvd). In that context, the album takes on a whole new meaning.

Paul McCartney made a Strong return to form with Flaming Pie. While the album does have a couple pf tracks that Could (rightly) be considered filler, the strength of the best material is among McCartney’s best songs. Featuring guests such as Steve Miller, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne and others, this deluxe set is both ambitious and disappointing. The ambitious part is that it chronicles all,of the released songs, some alternate mixes, demos and the b-sides (MPL listened to complaints about the download disc for ‘Flowers In the Dirt”) and features two DVDs along with a lossless digital download. Why no Blu-ray or DVD lossless option? I’m not sure.

We get oodles of extras including reproductions of lyric sheets, a guitar pick, artwork, a nice book with plenty of pictures, a Linda McCartney recipe booklet.for the price, however, I would think a McCartney autograph should come with the deluxe limited edition. The box itself is handsome and thick (even though mine had a minor flaw which I refined twice before giving up as they ALL had the same flaw).

Missed opportunities? The Ooba-Jooba tracks feature song demos from McCartney’s career. I would rather have those demos here (even if they don’t fit sequentially) as who knows if we will get them on deluxe reissues or when? Luckily, the nonsense of the super duper deluxe with something like the Wings Over Europe disc isn’t replicated here. This IS a super duper deluxe but it doesn’t have exclusive music.

This improves on the previous set just not 100% yet.

I am a huge Beatles and McCartney Fan. These archive releases were a great idea and I don''t mind paying the extra for something that that has been so well put together and enjoyable. They are truly special..BUT when you advertise a high resolution download on all the archive releases and they don''t work (admittedly haven''t tried the Flaming Pie one yet) this stands in the way of fairness and being truthful about what you are offering. If I plonk out more than $175-200, I should get an archive download that works ALWAYS and doesn''t hand me a blank frozen page!! If that situation changes, I will happily edit this review to reflect that.

Frequently a remaster is a let down for me just a bad re-equalizing of the original work. This remaster sounds as if it was the original master and the first release was a generations old copy. Well Done to all involved in this project and thank you from a music lover.

I was pleasantly surprised that this album is so good. Most of it is a love letter to Linda. It does have its faults. Sometimes Paul gets a little fancy when less would be better. The instrumentation was flawless and the harmonies are geat. I recommend this album.

The first thing fans will want to know is, having owned the original album for years, what’s the remastered sound like? Well, it’s great. No problems. Unless you’re listening through a good system you may not notice the difference because the original was so good anyway. But through good headphones, yes, it’s really good. One might call it an appropriately subtle enhancement. The 2nd disc is a real treat. Lots of stuff I’ve not heard before, mostly focussing on acoustic type home and studio recordings of good quality. Linda can be heard requesting Calico Skies, and I think I heard Stella & Mary at one point? If you are not familiar with the album think “White Album / Abbey Road” type Paul. Strong melodies, lots of variety, great vocals and fine musicians behind him. In my opinion this is easily his best, most consistent work after Wings.

I don''t want to sound too harsh here, as no-one forced me to buy this VERY expensive deluxe version of this latest archive series release. The ''problem'' is that I''m actually a life-long fan, like so many others- so we can often be blinkered in our views & a little too forgiving when something smells like a bit of a ''cash grab''. I don''t know if McCartney is actually aware of the pricing of these archive sets (?). If he is- it somewhat discredits his claims of still ''considering himself working-class''. This set IS beautifully presented (like most of the other boxes), but when you take a look at what musical morsels are presented, they''re not overly generous. As much as I like Macca''s solo output- particularly this post-anthology attempt to re-evaluate his quality control, demos of the tracks from this album aren''t really ''historic'' & really don''t merit more than a couple of listens. The contents of 2 of the discs (demo''s & ''in the studio) run to approx 30 minutes each- so could''ve fitted onto a single disc & the ''At The Mill'' disc audio repeats much audio used on the DVDs. If you decide on the ''play all'' option of the 2nd dvd, you also think: "Hold on- he''s repeating himself here"- which is irritating. That''s because the ''press pack'' material duplicates many of the same interview segments. It''s CERTAINLY not value for money & as these releases get MORE & MORE expensive, it''s difficult to defend what''s included (& what ISN''T). There are the usual facsimile hand written lyrics etc, which are fine if you like that kind of thing. I''ve got used to them, but does anyone actually get more than very brief enjoyment from looking at them?. If you DO buy this set- you''ll be initially bowled-over by how lush it all seems, but- dig into the contents & you just feel like a bit of a mug to be honest. I couldn''t bring myself to give it 2 stars, as it''s a good album- but it always was. Just as a footnote: With the ''Red Rose Speedway'' & ''Wild Life'' archive boxes (the former being GREAT- the latter rather skimpy)- the disc that was REALLY INTERESTING imo (Wings Over Europe) was only available if you payed over £500 for even MORE packaging. I''m not a rich man, though I can''t claim poverty after buying both. But- that marketing ploy was really a step too far. PLEASE PAUL- can you concentrate on what fans want to HEAR- either that- or include some REAL handwritten lyrics!

Absolutely love Flaming Pie, from way back when the album was first released in 1997. The idea of Flaming Pie came off the back of the Beatles Anthology project in 1995 when Paul was inspired to write new songs. The term “Flaming Pie” had actually come from a John Lennon quote during an interview, where he was asked how the Beatles got their name. Back to the album itself, and as stated, it’s a great album full of beautiful melodic songs with superb lyrical content that Paul has come to be known for, it’s also interesting to mention that this album was the last that Linda McCartney was involved in, as she sadly passed away shortly after its initial release. The album features acoustic driven songs such as Little Willow and Calico skies which are simply beautiful. Some great musicians help Paul out on this album too including Steve Miller and Ringo plus Paul’s son James adds some nice guitar works on the track Heaven On a Sunday. I saw another review that said they weren’t too fond of this album?? Excuse me? I can’t comprehend that at all, simply put - Flaming Pie is largely regarded amongst fans, as one of Paul’s best later albums, especially up to the point it was first released in 1997. It was also critically acclaimed and well received across the board on its first release in May 1997, In this latest instalment of the Paul McCartney Archive series, you get this lovely 2 cd set in gatefold packaging - disc 1 is the remastered album done at Abbey Road Studios and the second disc features 21 home recordings and demos. A fascinating insight to how the songs started out!, If your a Paul McCartney fan you will more than likely be completely familiar with Flaming Pie, if not, I highly recommend it. There is not a bad track on this album and the sound quality is fantastic! Cut yourself a large slice of Flaming Pie and enjoy 🥧

This is a truly fantastic album! Apparently, after the Beatles anthology project Paul having reconnected with his Beatle past wanted to recreate music in the style (and quality) of The Beatles. There’s not a dud track on this glorious album, every song is brilliant. Now, if you think I’m being servile here or overly biased and / sycophantic then just buy the album for yourself and listen to the tunes and melodies. Then you will see (hear) that all the songs are wonderful. This remaster / reissue contains many bonus tracks, demos and outtakes - all of which are a pleasure to listen to. This particular release is great value for money and will provide many hours of pure listening enjoyment. If you can afford it - there is also a deluxe & super-deluxe version of ‘Flaming Pie’ - both of which contain many glorious extras. How this guy does it (produce melodies and tunes of such high quality) is beyond me. Many of the songs are ‘top drawer’ and the musicianship / production is (as you’d expect) flawless. I don’t want to labour the point...just trust me: if you enjoy top quality music (whether or not you are a Beatle fan) then I promise you that you WILL enjoy this CD and its bonus material. Wonderful album: buy ‘n’ enjoy!

I bought Flaming Pie when it came out... was it really 1997!!! I loved it then and I love it now. The new Remastered Version is a two disc affair matching in design the Archive Collection that has been gradually released in recent years. The first disc is simply the original but beautifully remastered at Abbey Road of course. The original has always sounded great to me but the new version is sonically really top notch. Some of his best songs Young Boy, Calico Skies, Little Willow and a couple of great rockier numbers with Steve Miller on guitar. The second disc is a generous 70 minutes plus of Home Demo''s, Run throughs, acoustic version etc. It ends with five songs not included on the original album. I enjoyed the second disc but am not honestly sure I will play it that much BUT this is ESSENTIAL McCARTNEY and it is beautifully presented and has never sounded better :-)
