Product Description

The Toro cheerleading squad has spirit, spunk, sass and a killer routine that''s sure to land them the national championship trophy for the sixth year in a row. But for newly-elected team captain, Torrance (Kirsten Dunst), the Toro''s road to cheer glory stumbles when she discovers their perfectly choreographed routines were stolen from a hot hip-hop squad across town. Now the squad must scramble to find a new routine to compete in this year''s competition.

Sunny, happy Torrance (Kirsten Dunst) is the new leader of the Toros, the cheerleading squad of Rancho Carne, an affluent San Diego high school that has lousy football players but one hell of a cheerleading team. National champions, they''re the ones who bring in the bodies to the football games with their award-winning moves and sassy grace, and they''re poised to take their sixth national cheer title. Torrance''s new reign as cheer queen, though, is cut short when she discovers that her snotty, duplicitous forerunner was regularly stealing routines from the East Compton Clovers, the hip-hop influenced cheerleaders of a poor inner city school, and passing them off as the original work of the Toros. Scrambling to come up with a new routine for the Toros--and do the right thing by giving the Clovers their due--Torrance butts heads with the proud and understandably wary Isis (Gabrielle Union), the leader of the Clovers, who wants nothing to do with a rich blond white girl, but does want to get her squad to the championships. Problem is, only one team can take home the national title. Who''s it gonna be?

An unexpected box-office hit in the late summer of 2000, Bring It On is a smart, snappy teen comedy that bristles with good cheer (literally) and lively, down-to-earth characters. The story may be fairly predictable (who''s going to win the big championship?), but director Peyton Reed and screenwriter Jessica Bendinger have fleshed out their characters with formidable strength and provided them with sharp dialogue. Dunst is a radiant comedian, projecting warmth, determination, sincerity, and a sublime airheadedness, and Union is an impressive dancer and counterpart to Dunst, matching her admirably despite her limited onscreen time. An excellent young supporting cast rounds out the film, most notably Eliza Dushku (Faith of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Jesse Bradford (Steven Soderbergh''s King of the Hill) as siblings new to Rancho Carne, who become Torrance''s best friend and potential new boyfriend, respectively. All in all, a pleasantly surprising and intelligent teen movie. Don''t miss the opening sequence, a hilarious send-up of all those high school cheerleading routines you had to sit through at boring pep rallies. --Mark Englehart

Bring it on gives a very compelling story about two high schools, well one is cheating. The sort of stealing that happens in this cheer movie, happens all the time in the real world. Another aspect as to why I love the movie is because my whole life I have been in cheer and it really portrays black cheerleaders in a beaming light, a sport that has been dominated by white people. Black cheerleaders are allowed to prosper.

Another non-horror movie I really enjoy. While this film is quite silly, it is fun to watch. It''s another one of those make you feel good movies that there seem to be a million of. However, a lot of those aren''t this fun. There is some great high flying cheerleading/dancing action going on, with music that keeps you energized. This film has some bad language, some adult suggestive behaviour/language, no nudity and no gore. The acting is decent in this, for the way it is supposed to be..and of course, it has the always beautiful Eliza Dushku. Recommended for a time when you just want a movie to entertain and not think about.

Some say it''s predictable; some say it''s just another teen movie. But it''s hardly possible to dislike "Bring It On," because it succeeds in creating fun in most down-to-earth fashion. To say it''s bad is like kicking a puppy clinging to your feet.
To me, the best thing in "Bring It on" is that it pays due respect to cheerleading, sometimes hugely misunderstood among the people (see "Replacement," for example"). I am teaching at women''s college in Japan, and I have actually witnessed what they can do once. It was sensational. They took my breath away. "Bring It On" will increase the number of cheerleaders in high school, and it''s no wonder. On top of that, I am willing to welcome Kirsten Dunst in teen movie, whose previous work was "Virgin Suicides." I don''t say I hate the movie; still, I''d rather give another $ 10 to watch "Bring It On" than to see her dead. The real find here is, however, Eliza Dushku, who easily steals every scene she''s in with her natural charm. Look how she smiles!
The most important key to the success of the film may be, after all, the characters are all taking their life seriously as the exciting national competition of the final scene shows. We find there that we, young and old, could relate to them. After all it''s good to see people enjoying themselves, and doing what they can do earnestly. Love cheerleading. Love life.
[FROM HERE BELOW, MY COMMENTARY REFERS ONLY TO VHS SPECIAL EDITION ISSUED IN 2001]
As Amazon''s technical information is slightly erroreous, I add some correction below. The tape contains two "deleted scenes"; one of them is a kitchen scene, in which Torrence (Dunst) confesses she has a boyfriend. The other is the scene where Torrance''s parents talk about her future education in college by the side of swimming pool. The "extended scene" is the locker room scene, originally done in one shot, like De Palma or Scorsese often does. The director wisely decided to use only the half of it, and for the rest of the scene he substituted frontal shots of Torrance and her friends respectively. (It may be interesting to compare two takes for fans because total effect is different.) So, "Locker Room Scene" IS this "Extended Scene"; they are the same thing. Nothing serious, though, when the feature film is so funny.

Bright and beautiful Torrance [Kirsten Dunst] lives for cheerleading –it’s her world, gets made team captain of the Torros and on the first day looses one of her ‘girls’ to injury. Enter feisty new girl to school ‘Missy’ Pantone [Eliza Dushku] a gymnastics star who finds herself in a school with no gym team so reluctantly tries out for the cheerleader squad. Missy walks out on the first workout and shows Torrence the routine they are using has been stolen from The East Compton Clovers, a highly inventive black cheerleading squad from a less privileged neighbourhood. Torrence is devastated when the sassy and inspirational Isis [Gabrielle Union], leader of the Clovers, explains that the award winning routines the Torros have used to win the ‘nationals’ for the past five years have actually been stolen from them. This leads to the obvious rivalry between the two teams as Torrence fights to get her ’cheers’ into shape with new routines and works her way around the love interest in the form of Missy’ brother as she tries to lead her team to another victory. The film opens with a ‘cheer’ soundtrack and routine with very much tongue in cheek lyrics but it turns out to be a dream. It’s a refreshing change to see a more serious or professional viewpoint on cheerleading rather than just spoilt high school ‘rich’ girls trying to show off their latest fashion accessories etc, although individuals within the team do illustrate the usual stereo types. Dunst is good as the naive captain who wants to play fair and win honestly, Dushku excels as the anti ’cheer’ gymnast who suddenly gets into it all and Union is perfect as the underdog with attitude. The competitive nature and exuberance of cheerleading comes through at the end although one does get a sense that much of the dance routines are over the top and wouldn’t actually be allowed at National level [but what do I know?], but that’s what helps to make a good dance movie, right?. Hilarious it isn’t, but it is a witty and amiable film that is hugely enjoyable but some frank talk and mild swearing along with a few ‘adult’ gestures, tends to push this out of the youngest audience bracket making it a 12 and over rating. The single DVD from 2000 hasn’t really dated and is just a good a watch as when it came out. The disc itself contains 8 different extras including a trailer, make up tests, extended and deleted scenes as well as directors commentary and spotlight on location, totalling some 45 minutes or so. If you like dance movies like Step Up or Honey, then you might enjoy this but it’s not full on romance like Dirty Dancing. Worth watching just to see how good these cheerleading dance/acrobatic routines are but the final quarter as they reach the Nationals does tend to jar with the rest of the mid paced movie, it’s almost seems rather rushed as they try to wrap it up too quickly and more could have been made of the rivalry here. However still deserving a solid **** rating.

Torrance is the newly appointed captain of cheerleader champions the Toros. After one of the team suffers an accident, the Toros recruit gymnastics star Missy Pantone, but upon witnessing the Toros first routine Missy is disgusted and points out that it has been stolen from another team called The East Compton Clovers. This opens up a whole can of worms that not only brings the Toros into conflict with the Clovers, but also means that they must come up with an original routine if they are to win the American championship honestly. Spirited picture about cheer leading? Well yes it is, it''s witty, smart and ever so amiable. Tho the film loses some of its sharpness in the final quarter (a brave ending would have made all the difference), Bring It On clearly touches on race and class issues whilst bringing to the fore the competitiveness of cheerleader teams. The usual formula''s of bitching and back stabbing are naturally in here, and of course no film of this type would be complete without some strand of treacle plot love, but the mix is fine and the exuberance of the routines is hugely enjoyable cinema. Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Gabrielle Union and Jesse Bradford fill out the cast and all offer something in the way of watch ability. It could have been so much better for sure, but Bring It On is very entertaining film about a subject that until this picture came out (subsequent sequels would follow) was hardly tackled with this sort of vigour and intelligence before. 7/10
